Keynote Speaker, Toni GarveyNJLA Conference, 2005Tuesday, April 12 10 am As Phoenix City Librarian since 1996, Toni Garvey administers library services and programs for an urban library system of 13 branches and a Central Library in the City of Phoenix, serving a population of 1.5 million people. With over 20 years of experience working in libraries, Garvey is a leader whose vision of tomorrow’s library combines tradition with an entrepreneurial spirit that suits the southwest and the City of Phoenix. Garvey began her career at the Tucson-Pima Public Library. Prior to coming to Phoenix, she was Director of Library Services of the Loudoun County Public Library in Leesburg, Virginia. She also served as Deputy Director of that library system for five years before being promoted to Director. Garvey's strong background in all phases of library programs and services has enabled her to serve in a variety of professional roles in the Public Library Association. She is a member of the American Library Association, is on the national board of Libraries for the Future, and serves on the jury for The New York Times national librarian awards. She was the 2003 Library Journal “Librarian of the Year.” She received her Masters of Science Degree in Librarianship at Western Michigan University. Toni and her husband, Kevin, a molecular biologist, live in Phoenix with their two children, Brendan and Tess. |
