to the 2007 New Jersey Library Association Conference
Protecting Privacy and
Freedom in
Your Library
The Conference Committee and I look forward to seeing you at our annual
conference. The committee, headed up by Cindy Czesak, Heidi Cramer and Nancy
O’Grady, has planned a wonderful array of programs and events for
your enlightenment and enjoyment.
In keeping with my presidential theme, we’re offering a number of
programs dealing with privacy and confidentiality issues in libraries. I
hope that you will be able to attend one or more to ensure that you have
a clear understanding of the laws regarding these issues as well as the
practices your library needs to follow in order to observe them.
We have a number of special events planned and I hope that I’ll see
you at them. Starting right off on Monday night, you can take part in “Dine
Around.” Thanks to Allan Kleiman who organized this, you can register
to join a group for dinner at the restaurant of your choice. What a great
way to network!
After dinner, we have a dynamic speaker for our Presidents’ Program.
GraceAnne DiCandido bills herself as a militant cyberfeminist, middle-aged
Italian-American mama, information angel, Yankee fan since birth and currently
a
book reviewer and teacher of children's and YA literature. We look forward
to an entertaining and inspiring program.
Our keynote speakers are notable indeed! On Tuesday, two of the four Connecticut
librarians served with a National Security Letter and put under a gag order
will be speaking of their experience. On Wednesday, John Perry Barlow, who
wrote the “Declaration of Independence of Cyberspace” promises
to be an exciting speaker in things digital.
Earlier on Wednesday – much earlier – you can join our immediate
part president April Judge for a Fun Run. An alternative choice is the Fast
Fun Walk with me.
I’m highlighting only a few of the many choices you’ll have
throughout the conference. I know that you will enjoy spending some time
by the sea to renew and refresh yourself, see current colleagues and meet
new ones, and have some quality time to strengthen your skills and just
have a good time.
I look forward to seeing you in Long Branch.
