What is RSS?

  1. RSS is a format for syndicating news and information from major news sites like the New York Times, news-oriented community sites like Slashdot, and personal weblogs.
  2. Special software (hosted on your computer) or an online service gathesr these feeds and saves them for your review. As feeds are updated from the syndicating source, your feed reader/aggregator will automatically be updated.
  3. NJLA offers a news feed of its current job postings.

Why subscribe to an RSS feed?

The biggest advantage to RSS feeds is that instead of visiting various sites to gather news and information, you can set up your feed reader to "pull" postings from these sites and store them in one central location. Look for the RSS or XML icon at sites that offer this service.

What is a news reader or RSS aggregator?

RSS aggregators (also called feed readers or news readers) gather news and information feeds. A feed reader may be software that you download to your computer or it may be hosted on a free online service.

Aggregator software that runs on your own computer may be a standalone program or integrate into a program that you already use, such as Microsoft Outlook and the Mozilla browser.

There are a number of free online aggregators available to the public. If you would like to have access to your feeds from multiple computers, an online service is best.
