ACRL Strategic Plan Implementation

New Jersey Chapter Annual Report, 2006-2007

Strategic Area: Higher Education and Research

Goal Area: Learning

Strategic objective: 3. ACRL increases member abilities to create and manage physical and virtual spaces and services as environments for discovery.
Activity: In April 2007, at the annual New Jersey Library Association’s Conference, the Chapter’s User Education Committee sponsored two programs, both relating to this objective. The first program instructed attendees on how to use Captivate, a software used to design IL tutorials. The second program also addressed the creation of library tutorials for use as instructional aids. The User Ed Committee has also worked all year on developing a directory of electronic database tutorials, with the goal of facilitating patron use of these resources.

Goal Area: Scholarship

Strategic objective: 2. Continue to play a leadership role in promoting research and publication in academic and research librarianship.
Activity: The Chapter’s Research Committee sponsored a forum that attracted librarians from around the state, and they selected the following work to receive our annual research award: Laura Bowering Mullen and Karen A. Hartman, for “Google Scholar and the Library Web Site: The Early Response by ARL Libraries.” College & Research Libraries 67 no. 2 (March 2006): 106-122.

Goal Area: Advocacy

Strategic objective: 4. Increase ACRL’s influence in public policy affecting higher education.
Activity: The Chapter has a legislative liaison who regularly updates members on state and national legislative actions that affect academic libraries and college and university campuses.

Strategic objective: 3. Strengthen partnerships with other organizations.
Activity: The Chapter made a concerted effort to collaborate with other NJ library associations. In March 2007, we co-sponsored an all day technology symposium with Princeton University libraries that addressed social networking. And in April 2007, we co-sponsored a program with the New Jersey Library Associations’ Administration and Management Section, which discussed the management of student workers.

Strategic Area: Leadership

Goal Area: Continuous Learning

Strategic objective: 2. Increase recognition of the value of libraries and librarians by leaders in higher education, etc.
Activity: The Chapter co-sponsored an annual symposium for academic librarians in New Jersey (January 2007) and our keynote speaker was incoming ACRL President Julie Todaro, who spoke about the value of libraries.

Strategic objective: 3. Increase ACRL’s efforts to support recruitment of new and diverse talent to academic and research librarianship.
Activity: The Chapter listserv regularly receives position announcements from around the state and country.

Goal Area: Information Technology

Strategic objective: 1. Support the development and recognition of academic and research librarians as leaders and experts in information technology applications.

Smith Library of UMDNJ.

Strategic Area: The Association

Goal Area: Membership

Strategic objective: 2. Increase the number of academic and research librarian members.

Strategic objective: 1. Expand the appeal of ACRL membership among current members.
Activity: We have a Chapter website that is regularly updated.

Strategic objective: 4. Increase the appeal of ACRL membership to broader communities.
