Call to order: 12:55 p.m.
Minutes: The minutes of the May 5 meeting were approved as submitted.
President's Report--Marc Meola
- Thank you to Executive Board -- Marc thanked the board and committee chairs for their hard work and support during his year as president.
- ACRL -- Marc submitted a brief report to ACRL National on our year's activities. He also sent a brief write-up to Chapter Topics on Pam Snelson's talk at our conference luncheon. Links to pictures and material from her presentation are now posted on our website. Marc spoke to Meagan Bielefeld about getting a new banner for our chapter with the new ACRL logo and colors. She said that we can use chapter funds for a new banner; it will be up to our chapter to have the banner made. The board discussed possible options for getting this done (such as Kinko's); Marc will follow-up on possible sources and prices. He also sent a letter on behalf of the board stating our approval of Philadelphia as the 2011 ACRL National conference site.
- NJ Academic Librarian Blog -- The board continued discussion from our May meeting regarding the future and purpose of the blog. While most board members felt that this blog was more useful for academic librarians than the NJLA blog, discussion focused on why we want to have this? Board members agreed that some of the information that we post on our website could benefit from being posted to the blog where it could be more interactive. We could also link from our newsletter to the blog. We should use the blog for current events (such as programs) and link to the NJLA blog for other issues/information. We will also need to market this more. Marc will send an email to our listservs to ask for volunteers to help with the blog.
- NJ Higher Education Funding -- Marc asked if the board wanted to send letters regarding the crisis in higher education funding. Most members have already done so from their respective institutions, but they felt that the board could write on behalf of the Knowledge Initiative funding (which is not included in the following year's budget). This is vitally important to all academic libraries in the state. Luis Rodriguez offered to contact the KI office at the State Library to let them know what we want to do, and he will draft a letter from the board that we can send to the governor and the legislators. We will also encourage individuals to write on behalf of the KI; Luis will check with KI staff and website about talking points that individuals can use in their letters.
Incoming President's Report--Nicole Cooke
- ACRL National 2007 -- Nicole distributed a letter from ACRL National with deadlines for the 2007 conference. The deadline for papers/workshops has already passed (May 10); the deadline for poster sessions is October 10, and the deadline for roundtable discussions is January 10.
- VALE Users Conference -- Joan Getaz contacted Nicole with the date for the next conference; it will be held January 5, 2007, at the Busch Campus Center at Rutgers-Piscataway. Nicole will co-chair. The first planning meeting will be in July (exact date, time, and place to be determined).
- Membership Project -- Chris Lee now has a volunteer, Bill Walker from Kilmer Library at Rutgers, to work with him on membership. Nicole has asked them to take our membership lists from NJLA and ACRL and develop a survey to see what our members like or want to see from us. This should help us in our programming. The board felt that we should include something that describes the benefits of membership in ACRL as well as NJLA. Fran wrote an article on this in 2004. Mary offered to locate this and send to Chris. This is also a good time to see about re-establishing our liaison list from NJ academic libraries; our previous list is seriously outdated.
- Fall Program -- Nicole asked whether the board would be interested in offering a special program in the fall. We could collaborate with another section, such as Information Technologies. The board discussed possible topics including privacy issues, copyright, plaigiarism; most felt that a program involving technology would be the most popular. Nicole will contact the IT section to see if they are interested.
- Future Meeting Dates -- We will continue with the first Friday of the month, although some dates may have to be adjusted if conflicts arise. We will not meet in January (VALE Conference) or April (NJLA Conference). As of now the dates will be:
Sept., 8
Oct. 6
Nov. 3
Dec. 1
Feb. 2
Mar. 2
May 4
June 1
Penny will book the University Librarian's Conference Room, 3d floor, Alexander Library, Rutgers-New Brunswick, for all dates. We will teleconference with Montclair State Library.
- Election Results -- Nicole will notify ACRL of our election results: Karen Topham, VP/Pres. Elect; Penny Page, Secretary; and Ruth Hamann, Member-at-Large. Julie Maginn continues as Member-at-Large. Fran Kaufmann will attend ALA and will represent us at the Chapters Council.
Committee Reports:
NJLA Liaison--Nancy Madacsi
The NJLA board is still working on a "Model Personnel Manual." The board voted raises for Pat Tumulty and the NJLA staff.
Technology Committee--Mary Mallery
The committee's program on "Social Software and Libraries" was held today at TCNJ; 35 people attended and discussion was lively. The committee submitted a proposal to ACRL for a panel presentation on "Technology Innovation: Unfurling the Sail or Rocking the Boat?" The panelists will be Nancy Davenport from CLIR, Eric Schnelling from Ohio University, and Jim Robertson from NJIT. They expect to hear in August if their program is accepted. (On a related note, Luis Rodriguez has submitted a proposal for a poster on plaigiarism; Marc has submitted a poster on Wikipedia.) Rutgers will host the presentations for the Technology Innovation Award again next year.
User Education--Karen Topham
The committee is sponsoring a program on June 16 at Brookdale Community College on "Captivating Your eLearners." Theo Haynes is the incoming chair for next year.
Research Committee--Sara Harrington
Sara and Triveni Kuchi will continue as co-chairs for the next year.
Adjournment: 1:50 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Penny B. Page
Secretary
