President’s Report – Vibiana Bowman

Next Meeting  - Will be a joint meeting of outgoing and incoming boards.  The current chairs of all committees will be contacted to send a list of committee chairs for 2003-2004 in time for the June 13 meeting to be held at Rutgers, New Brunswick. Vibiana will book the small conference room, Alexander Library and bring refreshments. Please contact Vib if you need a parking permit.  Please bring any forms, handouts, stationery that should be passed on to your successor. Julie now has care of the chapter banner.

NJLA Spring Conference – Vib thanked everyone for their hard work in bringing everything together for the chapter sponsored programs and the awards luncheon.  The speakers and programs were very good.

ACRL National Conference – Vib and Luis attended the conference in April in Charlotte, NC. The program on Marketing Academic Libraries was excellent.  Vib will be happy to share materials.  Vib, Luis, and Sue Rosenberg have been asked to speak on the topic at the Delaware Valley Chapter of ACRL chapter at the end of May.  Vib also wants to send a marketing program proposal to VALE for the annual conference. The national conference was very worthwhile because the focus was on academic libraries. Ruth mentioned that the poster sessions were difficult to find because they were interspersed with vendors. Ruth led a roundtable. This is a good way to exchange ideas. We might want to try this for some of our programming at the NJLA Conference or the Academic Librarians Symposium.  Vib mentioned a good program on diversity. Debbie Malone agreed to highlight our chapter’s activities in Chapter Topics.

NJLA Executive Board Update   Mary Mallery (NJLA CUS Liaison)

The NJLA Executive Board met on April 14 at the Princeton Public

Library.  Pat Hannon of Emerson Public Library is the new President. The

2003 NJLA Conference was very successful. There were 962 attendees, the

largest number in 10 years. Heidi Cramer and the Conference Committee

members were congratulated on a job well done.  The NJLA Exec. Board

voted to endorse ALA's position on the Patriot Act. The ALA Resolution

on the USA Patriot Act and Related Measures That Infringe on the Rights

of Library Users is on their Web site at the following (long) URL:

ectual_Freedom3/Statements_and_Policies/IF_Resolutions/Resolution_on_the

The listing of how other states are supporting the ALA resolution is on

the ALA Web site at:

The new ALA website was discussed.  The organizational structure is

better, but the URL's are very long and there are no redirects to new

pages on the site. The Exec. Board voted to endorse William Paterson

University in applying to be the location of the 2004 Arbuthnot Lecture

with Ursula K. Le Guin.  Information about the lecture is on the ALA Web

site at:

The NJLA Finance Committee will meet to draft the FY04 Budget to present

at the next NJLA Exec. Board meeting at Morris County Library on May 20.

The Orientation Meeting for new NJLA Executive Board members and

Committee and Section Chairs will be held on June 17 at the East

Brunswick Public Library.
