President’s report: – Karen Topham
- VALE Program. We have 15 proposals for poster sessions; 8 lunch discussion topics; 21 break-out session proposals. KT emailed the contact at Busch Campus because there may not be sufficient space for posters. There is space for 13, but we may have 15 or 16. KT will do a site visit to see how we can accommodate. Question: unless there are potential fire hazards, some can be put in the hall? Question: asked of KT to check on the number of tables at the lunch tables, 8 or 10?
- Email from Megan Griffin (ACRL). There is still funding to bring campus advocacy to different states. Some funds given to states already.
Email message below:
I'd like to remind all the ACRL Chapters that we still have funding available to bring campus outreach and advocacy programming to your state. To date, the University Library Section has awarded funding to the ACRL Chapters of New England, Louisiana, Iowa and Kansas.
For details on how to apply for the funding, please see the ACRL-ULS Campus Outreach and Advocacy Toolkit and select the Take Action tab. The Web site is available at http://www.ala.org/ala/acrl/acrlissues/marketingyourlib/ulsadvocacytoolkit/ulstoolkit.cfm.
The application process will stay open until August 1, 2008, provided there are funds remaining, and the chapter can submit expense receipts before August 15, 2008.

Chair, ACRL University Library Section

Committee Reports
Research - Reported by MT
- Meeting held 12 October to finalize call for proposals. Call will go out on 05 November to various listservs, newsletters, and websites. Send additional postings to Mark. Submissions are due on 04 February 2008.
- Draft of webpage is now available. http://www.njla.org/njacrl/ResComm/ResComm.html. This address will be published and will be appended to the call for proposals. The new web address is not yet available.
- VALE conference proposal submitted. Members will be on hand for recruitment and information
- Will only do one program at NJLA. Focus will be on 25th Anniversary of the committee. There are no archives for the Committee. To whom should such a call go? Question: What will be the nature of the material in the archives? Mark will contact Dan O’Connor and others to gather information. Spring 2010 celebration.
- E-pub award. No sponsors as of yet. Negative responses from some institutions (Rutgers and William Paterson) and no response yet from others (BCC and UCC). Committee is committed to the award and will consider self-funding the award if needed. They are still determining the definition of e-publication. Some examples were suggested. Some may be problematic, but the committee would like to “test the waters.” There is an understanding of some potential overlap with the main research award. This will be a pilot award.
Choice magazine has specific criteria for electronic publications. The criteria for this award have not yet been finalized. Still question about the difference between the e-pub award and the research award. Should there be two awards within the same category – research, but one given to electronic. Should we really consider the format as opposed to categorizing format? This award intended to encourage more research irrespective of format. Future could have a single award category with, perhaps, two awards.
KT suggests moving forward with the NJLA approval process, but all new awards need to be approved by the NJLA Executive Committee. It is unlikely to be approved this year by NJLA Executive Board. As a result, the idea will be tabled.
So the idea of a new, separate award was tabled. The CUS Exec. Board suggests atempting to improve tcurrent award instead. Current award language does not highlight sufficiently the e-pub awards and in part is the reason for wanting a separate award. How else can this format be emphasized? Can the award be publicized at VALE or in another forum? KT will arrange for some time at VALE for the award to be mentioned. KT will coordinate with Joan Getaz. Mark will bring feedback to the committee. Information will also be included in the poster session at VALE.

User Education – Reported by ED
- 19 October previous meeting
- Double session at NJLA on information literacy
- Assessment for information literacy
- use of clickers
- pre and post test surveys
- Discussion about the role of reference librarians in academic libraries. Some places need double coverage on the desks; some no longer staff reference desk
- Community College General Education requirements. Recommendation: Divide technology and information literacy. Both goals may not be achieved if they are listed as a single criteria. Mark is on the committee. This is indeed a critical issue. Director of Academic Libraries of NJ will form a sub-committee to look at this issue. They will look to User Ed Committee for guidance. Gen. Ed. Requirments need to be very specific. In addition, the licensing rules are being revised. Revised language is on the website (Dept. of Education) and there is a comment period.
Amy Clark is drafting wording for the Gen Ed. Revision document. May be good to have an “official stamp” on the guidelines. Send them up through the CUS for Executive board discussion and approval.
- Next meeting: 16 November
Membership
- No report
Newsletter - Reported by KT
- Newsletter went out. There is some information still on hold for the next issue.

Nicole will comminute with this group as needed.

New Business
