Committee Reports
Research Reported by MT via email to KT
- Meeting set for October 12 at Seton Hall; call for proposals will be finalized. NJLA Conference Theme: Valuing Libraries, Librarians and Library Staff. Committee would like our feedback on the Electronic Publication award. This award will be for next year and would be publicized in the spring newsletter. The idea is that this would be a separate award because most proposals are geared towards print and they would like to recognize electronic publications (e-only publications, websites, etc.) See draft sent by KT earlier.
- Question: are there sufficient “electronic publications” to warrant a new and separate award?
- Question: What will the criteria be for selecting the award? Peer review, etc. Perhaps we need to highlight the electronic publications more in the call for proposals, rather than establishing a separate award.
- Comment: This is a research award. What sorts of websites, as an example, would represent website.
- Comment: criteria already exists for judging electronic publications (see CHOICE, for example).

Report from NJLA Executive Board – NC reported via email to KT
- The One Book NJ program is now housed under NJLA's Readers' Advisory Committee. It was noted by Anne Ciliberti that William Paterson's library sponsors a program each year based on the One Book selections. The board was not aware that academics participated, so if your library participates in any way with OBNJ, please do let NJLA know.
- A NJLA Legal Defense Fund has been established - housed under NJLA's Intellectual Freedom Committee.
- It's not too late to volunteer for NJLA sections and committees.
- The New Jersey State Library's 2007-2010 Strategic Plan (the executive summary) is now online at their website.
- Q&A NJ had a commercial aired during the recent MTV music awards and has noticed a significant increase in usage.
- Efforts to have the month of October designated National Book Club month is underway.
- State Librarian Norma Blake was unaware of all the letters / testimonials libraries (especially academic libraries) have been sending in on behalf of the NJ Knowledge Initiative - she has received notification of 2 letters. In the future, please be sure to CC Norma Blake on any correspondence. Advocacy is still very necessary - we are currently missing $1 million dollars in funding. And not only do we need that $1 million dollars restored, we need to maintain the current $2 million dollars in funding. A banner ad was to be places on the REF USA site alerting users about the NJKI plight, urging them to call their representatives to advocated for NJKI. It was also emphasized that phone calls (as opposed to emails and letters) are more effective. Finally, the name Angie McGuire of the Office of Economic Growth was mentioned as a person to call in support of NJKI.
