Minutes for January 6, 2000 Executive Board Meeting
Welcome: President Mary Mallery called the meeting to order at 10:15 a.m. at the Kilmer Library, Rutgers University. Present were: Steven Shapiro (Vice-President-President Elect), Luis Rodriguez (Past President), Torris Andersen, Jr., (Member-at Large), Pamela Holmes, (Member-at-Large), Penny Page (Chair, Research Committee), Zi-Yu Lin, (Technology Committee) Andrea MacRitchie (Newsletter editor), Aurora Ioanid, (Chair, Nominations Committee), and Ruth Hamann (Secretary-Treasurer).
- Approval of Minutes:. The minutes of the December 3rd meeting were unanimously approved as corrected.
II. President’s Report:
- NJLA Spring Conference Luncheon Speaker: Larry Hardesty, ACRL President,
will speak on the importance of a physical library facility as a component in the accreditation of a virtual university. A panel of respondents will probably include Oswald
Rattery, Judith Lin Hunt, and Rich Sweeney. Since ACRL will be funding Hardesty’s trip, we will be responsible only for his hotel and expenses.
- Middle States Action Committee, Council of NJ College & University Directors
Mary and Luis are on the committee. On Saturday they will attend the Accreditation Committee meeting to which they have invited chapter heads from the Middle States.Mary will put together a summary which will define the issues surrounding "Virtual Libraries" and accreditation.
- ACRL Chapters Council, ALA Midwinter Conference, January 16
-Mary received a notice for the ACRL Initiative Fund which provides opportunities for ACRL’s units to plan and implement projects and activities which support ACRL priorities. The deadline for receipt of the applications is March 15, 2000. The criteria and application form for developing the program proposal are available at

-The Agenda for the Midwinter Conference on January 16th has not yet been announced.
- Scholarly Communication Joint Program with ACRL DV on March 2nd
This will be held at the Scholarly Communication Center, Alexander Library, Rutgers University. A snow date is scheduled for March 7th.
- ACRL State Coordinator Designee for National Library Legislative Day
is Pat Tumulty.
- Letter to NJ Commission on Higher Education re. Librarian on the NJVU Committee
Mary is drafting a letter to Jeanne Oswald, Deputy Executive Director of the NJ Commission on Higher Education to voice our concern about the lack of representation of librarians on the Design Team and subcommittees for the NJ Virtual University (NJVU). She will outline some aspects of distance learning that require direct library planning.
- Vice-President’s Report
- NJLA Fall Business Meeting, December 10th
- Pat Tumulty spoke about the NJVU and the need for Librarian representation on the committee
- Steve met with the VALE Steering Committee.
- We need to improve communication between academic and public school
librarians.
- Membership in NJLA has declined; we need to attract younger members
- Steve
outlined the CUS Goals and Objectives for 1999/2000, including our plan for JAVAScript and FrontPage workshops. Many people at the meeting were unaware of our programs.
- Past-President’s Report
- Luis attended the last LISSA meeting and distributed information about NJLA-CUS and contact information for committee chairs. He has been offered ½ hour at the January or February meeting and is looking for suggestions on what to include in his presentation. He wants flyers and other information to distribute. We are hoping to set up a student chapter of NJLA-CUS, but it needs to be organized by a student.
- NJLA Executive Board Report
Mary attended the Executive Board meeting at Monmouth County Library and reported for Maureen Gorman who was absent.:
- In response to a report of decreasing membership, the Board is planning a membership drive. They are looking for input on how to increase the membership.
- Pat Tumulty spoke about a scholarship program for MLS students.
- A draft of guidelines for a Policy on Corporate Sponsorship of ALA Events has been developed. Developed by the NJLA Finance Committee.
- Representatives of EMA-NJ are also concerned about Middle States accreditation criteria for virtual Universities and want to be part of our movement.
- To avoid conflict with the ALA presidential candidate, the Reception at Camden County Extension Center has been moved up to 3:45pm on the Wednesday afternoon of the NJLA Spring Conference.
- Maureen brought up the plan for a reciprocal agreement with NY and PA ACRL members to reduce registration rates at conferences and workshops. Pat wants more information.

- Committee Reports

-The User Education committee is sponsoring two programs at the NJLA Spring Conference:
- Lynn Livingston of Rider University on grants for libraries and other non-profit institutions; 2- Corrine Smith, Director at Union County College Library and a faculty member will present their joint project: a compact-disc orientation to the library for faculty members
-The Committee’s December 17th presentation lunch meeting on the ACRL Immersion Program was well attended by 27 librarians, mostly responsible for coordinating instruction in their
libraries.
- Technology Committee (Zi-Yu Lin)
The committee is sponsoring two speakers for the Spring Conference: 1- Robert Downs will speak on the practical aspects of digital libraries and his experiences at Stevens; 2-Arthur Hafner, the dean of Seton Hall Libraries will speak on one-to-one service using the Internet
- Research Committee (Penny Page)
The committee is sponsoring two speakers for the Spring Conference: 1-Dan O’Connor on research Design; 2- a speaker from Kean College on how to develop a research project.
-Penny sent an announcement about the 1999 Research Award to ACALIBS.
-At its next meeting on March 3rd, the committee will evaluate submissions for the panel and award.
- Newsletter (Andrea MacRitchie)
The next newsletter will be out in early April. The committee is looking for news and would like to include something from each committee about the ALA Conference. A mid-February deadline has been set.
- Nominations (Aurora Ioanid)
The committee is still looking for a candidate for Vice-President.
- New Business
- The next meeting will be held on Friday, February 11th, 2000 at the Kilmer Library, Rutgers University.
