2011 VALE Annual Users' Conference: Call for Breakout Session Proposals
- The Planning Committee for the VALE Users’/NJLA CUS/NJ ACRL Conference seeks proposals for Breakout sessions to be presented at the next conference, Wednesday, January 5, 2011, at the Busch Campus Center of Rutgers University.
This year's theme is "Strengthening Connections: Keeping Our Libraries Vital." The Planning Committee welcomes proposals highlighting initiatives for the practice of academic librarianship informed by lessons learned from past experience, research, or the input of your user communities. Proposals highlighting innovative campus partnerships, collaborative projects or programs, outreach efforts, and other initiatives that have more fully integrated your library into the larger mission of your home institution and the broader academic community are particularly encouraged.

After the NJLA 2010 Conference: Presentations and More
The time is right to begin planning the 2011 VALE Users’/ACRL-NJ/NJLA-CUS Conference, scheduled to take place on January 5, 2011 at the Rutgers Busch Campus Center in Piscataway. We're looking for volunteers to serve on the planning committee and contribute to the preliminary work that has made the conference a successful and rewarding experience for participants during the last eleven years.
In keeping with past practice, we will be holding a one-time in-person planning meeting, with subsequent general arrangements to be handled by telephone, email, and web-conferencing as needed. If your schedule permits, please join us at 10:00 am on Wednesday, June 2, at William Paterson University's Cheng Library in Wayne. We will need help with the following tasks:
- selecting a conference theme
- identifying a potential keynote speaker
- staffing subcommittees to solicit/organize proposals for breakout sessions and poster sessions
- designing and editing a printed program
- coordinating transportation
- coordinating student volunteers
- managing conference information through the VALE and ACRL-NJ web sites as the program develops
….and other ideas that you bring to the table.
Both experienced and new members are welcome to participate on the planning committee. If you have been thinking about getting involved with the conference on the planning side, this would be a great year to do it. Contact Richard Kearney by May 28th at kearneyr@wpunj.edu or telephone 973.720.2165) if you would like to be part of the conference planning team and let us know if you can join us on June 2. Please note that even if you cannot attend the meeting on June 2, you can still be part of the planning team. We will send you the meeting minutes and contact you to get you involved.

Presenting:
"Why are we doing this? Designing Future Technology Adoption into the Business of Libraries"
Abstract: The technology future will offer librarians an inviting choice of tools and resources, from single-function web widgets to large-scale open source software systems. All will be as exciting to us as a toy store visit to a child, but we must be thoughtful about succumbing to "shiny new toy" syndrome. How do we make the right choices? In this presentation Steven Bell, Associate University Librarian for Research and Instructional Services at Temple University, will explore how library workers can fulfill their desire to harness new technology for the benefit of local communities in ways that support the core values and business mission of the 21st century library organization. Design thinking is introduced as one strategy for developing a thoughtful technology adoption process that can help us answer the question "Why are we doing this" before we do it.
Followed by Pecha Kucha*s with proponents and skeptics discussing:
