Young Adult Librarian - Hillsborough Library branch Library Intern or Librarian III/IV - Job ID #2020-03

Essential Functions of the Job: Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • performing direct patron service at the Youth/Young Adult Services desk including circulation, reference and readers’ advisory services to the public and using appropriate tools and resources to identify sources for customers;
  • performing off-desk responsibilities;
  • planning, promoting and implementing teen and tween library programs that encourage library usage and support the goals of the SCLSNJ Strategic Plan, community needs, and changes in technology and trends in library services;
  • assisting with maintaining and promoting library collections;
  • performing other library-related tasks as assigned by supervisor or branch manager.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • NJ Librarian’s certificate required; MLS (ALA accredited program desirable);
  • minimum of one year of professional library experience providing reference and readers’ advisory services and programming with youth and/or young adults;
  • reliable transportation to attend training, meetings, or other assigned duties at other branches or off-site locations as required.

Applicants who do not possess a minimum of one year’s professional library experience, as stated above, will be considered as Librarian IV (grade K) candidates. Students enrolled in an MLS program who have completed 18 credits may apply for the position as a Library Intern. Eligible candidates should be actively enrolled in an MLS program and be prepared to graduate by June, 2020.

Preferences: Experience providing reference, reader’s advisory, programs, and outreach to tweens/teens/young adults.

Physical Demands: Reading materials and providing verbal assistance to library users in English; manual dexterity to handle books, software, and a variety of other media formats; intermittent sitting, standing, and walking; ability to perform the essential functions of this position in areas of the building that are only accessible by using stairs; occasional bending, reaching, and stooping; lifting and carrying items weighing up to 20 lbs.; pushing or pulling objects weighing up to 100 lbs.; distinguishing sounds at various frequencies and volumes; distance vision sufficient to distinguish people or objects under a variety of light conditions; vision sufficient to view computer screens and spine labels under a variety of light conditions.

Salary: Librarian III - $54,700Librarian IV - $47,600/Library Intern - $41,400. 37.5 hours per week

Schedule: Since the library is open days and evenings, schedules may vary; including Saturday rotation; some holidays; schedule subject to change with notice.
