Are you ready to advance your career? Union Public Library, serving a diverse middle-class community of more than 56,000 residents in two locations is seeking an experienced reference librarian to supervise the busy Adult Services department. UPL has been consistently increasing usage and programming over the last several years and will soon be undergoing a major renovation to the Main Library. It is an exciting time to be part of this team! The new Head of Adult Services Librarian will have the opportunity to supervise an amazing, collaborative group of dedicated professionals and together manage adult programming, provide reference desk assistance and oversee outreach, social media and promotions.

The following is a sample of the tasks expected of the position for illustrative purposes and is not exhaustive:
  • Supervises and creates procedures for public services at the Adult Services Desk.
  • Provide reference and readers advisory to patrons of all ages utilizing the online catalog, books, reference sources, bibliographies, databases and the Internet.
  • Provide assistance to patrons using public computers or online resources.
  • Create the Reference desk schedule and set staff schedules in online scheduling software.
  • Create new and innovate programming.
  • Participate in professional development.
  • Responsible for administering the “Friends of the Library” museum pass program.
  • Manages the circulating Mobile Hotspot and Chromebook program.
  • Ensure that the Adult Department is keeping pace with current developments and best practices.
  • Schedule includes one evening per week and one Saturday per month (or more as needed).
  • Handle patron concerns and complaints with an emphasis on good customer service.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • A Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from a library program accredited by ALA or one that has been deemed acceptable by Thomas Edison State College.
  • One year of experience as a librarian in a public library providing services as outlined above.

Preferred:
  • At least one year of supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and be part of a team.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both in writing and verbally.
