Library Assistant - Part Time (temporary)

Job Summary: Performs clerical and paraprofessional library circulation duties, under coordination of the Supervising Library Assistant and supervision of the Library Director. This position is through December 31, 2020. This position is for a maximum of 20 hours a week and includes evening and weekend hours.

Essential Functions of the Job:

  • Maintain a courteous attitude with the general public, both in person and by telephone.
  • Circulation desk duties include: Charge and discharge materials, issue library cards, reserve/request items, respond to patron account questions, and empty the book dropCollect money for fines and lost materials, copies, faxes, etc.
  • Register new patrons for library cards
  • Work with other circulation personnel to ensure that someone is always at the desk
  • Answer questions about library organization, library holdings, policies and procedures
  • Contact patrons regarding programs and library materials as needed
  • Assist patrons in finding information and resources through the online catalog, internet and online resources, providing instruction where appropriate. Ask other library staff for help when necessary.
  • Monitor and observe public use of the library and make suggestions for improvements
  • Process newspapers, magazines, and mail; log subscriptions and display new periodicals after they are linked
  • Send faxes for library patronsKeep the work area and circulation desk neat and organized
  • Open building at the start of the day and close the building at the end of the day following defined procedures
  • Perform housekeeping chores around the library, such as neatening the magazine area, pushing in chairs, re-supplying the copier, etc.
  • Perform additional duties as needed or as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proactive customer service orientation, ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the general public, and ability to maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with other members of the library staff
  • Knowledge and familiarity with reference tools needed for basic research, including internet and online databases
  • Knowledge of library terminology, policies, and procedures
  • Active consumption of books and other media, with the ability and willingness to perform reader’s advisory for patrons
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to maintain established library records and files in an orderly fashion
  • Attention to detail, especially when discharging library materials and shelf-reading
  • Enthusiasm for libraries and an ability to stimulate interest and encourage participation in reading and other library activities
  • Ability to comprehend, analyze, and interpret library policies and procedures
  • Willingness to develop skills and library knowledge through on-the-job training, classes, or online tutorials
  • Able to lift, move, or carry up to 50 pounds


  • High school graduate or equivalentFamiliarity with computers and internet
  • Customer service experience
  • Previous library experience strongly preferred
  • Some college or library coursework preferred
  • Supervision: Supervised by the Library Director.
