Library Assistant, Beverly Free Library, Beverly

The Beverly Free Library is currently accepting resumes and seeking highly qualified applicants for the position of Library Assistant. Reporting directly to the Board of Trustees, the Library Assistant is responsible for overseeing day to day aspects of Library operations to efficiently and effectively serve the public needs. We are seeking a candidate with strong communication skills and progressively responsible library service. Responsibilities and Duties

  • Assists customers in person and by phone answering questions, checking materials in/out
  • Registers new borrowers for library cards and inspires a connection to all facets of the library by informing customers about programs, e-books, museum passes and other offerings
  • Handles fines and fees and reconciles money
  • Maintains neatness of public areas including desks, counters, shelves, tables and personal space visible to public
  • Assists with programming, including scheduling and creating and implementing some programs
  • Assists with grant proposals and submissions
  • Assists customers who need help with using pc’s or navigating the internet
  • Attends library and professional meetings and participates in continuing education opportunities
  • Attends library board meetings and any committee meetings and serves as a resource for the library board
  • Approaches challenging customer situations with a caring demeanor
  • Is a team member who welcomes and accepts input; seeks out advice on how to handle situations and supports team members by keeping them informed and offering help
  • Performs other duties as needed

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of library philosophies, practices, procedures and technologies
  • Ability to set priorities, make decisions, and exercise discretion with patrons and volunteers
  • Ability to think analytically and to exercise initiative
  • Ability to prioritize work, meet established deadlines and attend to detail as appropriate
  • Ability to handle multiple and simultaneous tasks
  • Knowledge of computers and the Internet, especially integrated library systems software, Microsoft Office, and similar software programs
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally and to prepare and present reports and other information in the appropriate format


  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic using whole numbers
  • Ability to perform extensive alphabetizing beyond the first letter of a word
  • Ability to converse, speaking clearly, concisely, and courteously
  • Ability to comprehend and follow written and/or oral one-or-two step instructions
  • Ability to perform numerical filing beyond the initial digit of a sequence of figures
  • Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the library
  • Position requires day, evening and weekend hours•Ability to lift, push, pull and carry 40 lbs or less on a routine basis

CURRENT SCHEDULE: 18 hours per week. 2 evenings (Tuesday and Friday 5pm-9pm) 2 days (Wednesday and Saturday 12N to 4pm) May be changed on discussion
