P-T Youth Services Library Assistant, Bernardsville Public LIbrary, Bernardsville

The Bernardsville Public Library is seeking an experienced Youth Services Library Assistant to:

  • Initiate, develop and execute a variety of programs for youth from birth through 18 years
  • Assess patron needs and interests and provide reference and reader’s advisory for youth
  • Apply concepts of early literacy to programming, collection development, patron assistance
  • Assist with collection management from item selection to elimination
  • In conjunction with the Youth Services Manager, enforce policies and procedures regarding patron behavior


As the library expands its post-COVID services to the public, in the short-term, this position may be required to assist the circulation staff. In the log-term, the position will be predominantly focused on Youth Services; however, the position will provide back-up to the circulation staff.The ideal candidate will be confident working with children, teens, and their care givers. The candidate will be imaginative, fun and energetic with a sense of adventure, balanced with patience, professionalism, excellent judgement, and a strong sense of responsibility. The library assistant should be comfortable developing programs in varied subject areas such as technology, science, crafts, and music, story times, and teen clubs. The candidate will be required to work with all ages from birth through teens and their caregivers. The library assistant may also support some administrative duties of the department. This is not a remote-work situation. The library assistant is expected to work all scheduled hours on site.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of children’s and young adult reading material, video games, music and movies.

Ability to work well with other staff members and to collaborate on assignments and projects.

Creativity and interest in developing fun and educational programs for all age ranges.

Flexibility regarding schedule as well as work assignments.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2-3 years of experience working with children in a professional capacity
  • College degree
  • Must be available to work one evening, and Saturdays and Sundays. Generally, two to three weekend days per month.
  • Comfort using computers for professional purposes.


20 hours /week including one evening per week, plus additional Saturday and Sunday hours monthly. Wage Range: Total range $18.25 - $20.00/hour. Candidate will start $0.30/hour less than offered figure for 1st 3 months. After 3 month review, barring substantial deficiencies, candidate will be raised to full offered wage.
