South Orange Public Library Interim Director

Background: Founded in 1864, the South Orange Public Library (SOPL) serves a diverse community by providing access to information, offering physical space to freely congregate and exchange ideas, and celebrating literacy, cultural growth, and local history. The Library seeks an Interim Director to oversee the library while a formal search is conducted.

Position Description: The Interim Director will be responsible for operating the library, including:

  • Selecting and managing staff and volunteers;
  • Ensuring that all activities, projects and services are planned and carried out in an effective, professional and timely manner;
  • Serving as the face and voice of the SOPL;
  • Managing the budget;
  • Providing for the maintenance and upkeep of the physical plant;
  • Maintaining key partnerships and donor relationships; and
  • Working closely with the library Board of Trustees in areas that include resource deployment and assessments of current library operations.

The Interim Director reports to the Board of Trustees and actively participates in the meetings of the Board. The ideal candidate must embrace current technology, be aware of future library and media trends, and possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both verbal and written.

Preferred Background:

  • Bachelor's degree and master’s degree, or other advanced degree, in Library Science, Nonprofit Management, or Business Administration.
  • Previous work experience in a library administrative supervisory capacity.
