P-T Community Outreach Library Assistant, Florham Park Library, Florham Park

Job Summary: In support of and in collaboration with the Library Director, the Community Outreach Library Assistant promotes library services, collections, programs, and spaces to enhance visibility in the local community, and works to establish and nourish strategic partnerships with community stakeholders. As needed, the Community Outreach Library Assistant also performs responsible clerical and paraprofessional library circulation, interlibrary loan, and computer/equipment maintenance duties under coordination of the Supervising Library Assistant and supervision of the Director.
Responsibilities:

  • Keeps up-to-date on library collections, services, and programs
  • Maintains library event calendar and registration lists
  • Creates and schedules social media content, and replies to public comments in a friendly and professional manner
  • Creates and schedules email newsletters in coordination with the Director and Youth and tech services staff
  • Produces and edits content for semi-annual brochure mailings
  • Assists with the planning and implementation of adult and teen programming
  • Assists with the production and editing of video content for library programs and marketing purposes
  • Composes press releases for distribution to local news organizations
  • Conducts community outreach to establish awareness and create partnerships with community groups such as: local businesses, local government, parent-teacher organizations, charities, senior groups, and housing associations
  • Maintains a courteous attitude with the general public, both in person and by telephone

Circulation desk duties include:

  • Charges and discharges materials, issue library cards, reserve items, respond to patron account questions, and empty and discharge book drop
  • Collects money for fines and lost materials, copies, faxes etc.
  • Works with other circulation personnel to ensure that one person is always at the desk.
  • Answers questions about library organization, library holdings, policies and procedures
  • Accepts reserves for library materials and notify patrons when items are available
  • Makes reminder calls to library patrons who have signed up for programs or to remind patrons of overdue materials
  • Explains and interprets library policies and procedures clearly and concisely to members of the public and to other libraries as needed
  • Assists patrons in finding information and resources through the online catalog, Internet and online databases and provides instruction when appropriate
  • Monitors and observes public use of the library and makes suggestions for improvements
  • Keeps work area (circulation desk) neat and organized
  • Performs additional duties as needed or as assigned, including any task necessary to help ensure patron safety and smooth operation of the library

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient in social media platforms, internet, email, creative software, and office productivity tools
  • Proactive customer service orientation, ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the general public
  • A team-player with the ability to maintain collaborative working relationships with other library staff
  • Knowledge of library terminology, library policies, and procedures
  • Working knowledge of library computers, software, copiers, fax machine and other technologies
  • Strong organizational ability, including ability to maintain established library records and files in an orderly fashion
  • Attention to detail, especially when copy-editing
  • Ability to comprehend, analyze, and interpret library policies and procedures, and to use personal judgment in situations that policies may not fully cover
  • Ability and willingness to develop skills and library knowledge through on-the-job training, classes, or online tutorials
  • May be required to lift, move and carry up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds.

Qualifications:

  • College degree, preferably in Communications, Marketing, English, or another similar field
  • Broad understanding of social media, marketing, and public relations practice and principles
  • Strong interest in book culture and reading, particularly when it comes to publishing trends
  • Demonstrated creativity
  • Possesses active listening skills
  • Customer service experience
  • Previous library experience, video production experience, or graphic design experience a plus
