Location: Gardner Main Branch Full-Time/Part-Time: Full-Time

About Jersey City and the Jersey City Free Public Library (JCFPL): At JCFPL we are growing to serve the increased needs of our community! Jersey City, NJ is the most diverse community in the U.S. (See: It is also the largest city in Hudson County, NJ and likely, with the next U.S. Census, to be the largest city in the State of New Jersey with a population nearing 300,000. The JCFPL is the largest municipal library in the State of New Jersey with 10 locations and a bookmobile. Our staff of nearly 140 provides services in a wide range of languages including English, Spanish, Hindi, Gujarati, Arabic and Tagalog, among others.

About the Position: As part of the Collections and Access Division and reporting to the Division Lead, the individual in this role is responsible for managing an efficient and dynamic Technical Services Department that meets the needs of the staff and patrons of the Jersey City Free Public Library. This includes but is not limited to: supervising the library’s technical services staff,; making decisions related to the creation, use, and management of machine-readable bibliographic records according to nationally accepted standards; training and sharing information with staff on issues related to the library catalog and book ordering; using best practices and strategies to grow and maintain Library’s collections that allows for discovery and access of the collections, as well as forward the Library’s strategic plan; and performing other duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate will have management experience, preferably in a technical services environment; extensive knowledge in cataloging, collection maintenance, and the use of technology; understanding of the role of libraries and librarians in expanding community access to resources and collections; familiarity with current cataloging standards and practices; experience in communicating and effectively instructing staff ; the ability to work independently and as a team member; enthusiasm, courtesy, flexibility, and a sense of humor.

  • Performs and/or supervises the cataloging and classification of library materials.
  • Performs and/or supervises the physical processing of all library materials for acquisitions and withdrawal.
  • Maintains statistics of technical services operations.
  • Maintains inventory of department equipment and supplies.
  • Assists in book ordering as needed.
  • Establishes department priorities within general policy direction.
  • Directs the activities of and allocates work to library assistants and other staff assigned to the Technical Services Department.
  • Reads publications and participates in activities of professional organizations to remain aware of developments in the library profession and in library technology.
  • Assist staff in departments and branches with questions related to cataloging and classification of materials, status of book orders, and other questions as needed.
  • Performs additional tasks and duties as necessary and/or as requested by Collections and Access supervisor.
Required Experience:
  • Administrative ability to initiate, organize, and follow through on special projects
  • Thorough knowledge of contemporary bibliographic maintenance standards and practice, including all prevailing cataloging rules, Dewey Decimal classification, OCLC/MARC records, and applicable library automation
  • Proficient computer skills to perform all duties
  • Ability to deal amicably and effectively with coworkers in the department and system-wide
Preferred Skills:
  • Fluency in a language other than English, especially one or more of those spoken by a substantial portion of Jersey City’s population, including Spanish, Arabic, Hindi, Gujarati, or Tagalog.
  • Knowledge of Jersey City’s population, geography, and/or local government.
  • Experience and facility in public speaking and meeting facilitation.
