Librarian--Adult Services, Metuchen Public Library, Metuchen, NJ

Metuchen Public Library serves a vibrant, and diverse community of over 14,000 people, with a mission to enrich and empower the public, foster lifelong learning, and strengthen community engagement in a welcoming environment. The Metuchen Public Library is seeking a dynamic, creative, and highly self-motivated individual who is passionate about adult services and community engagement. This position is responsible for innovative library programming, community outreach, day-to-day library reference, readers advisory services, collection development, supervising library volunteers, and other assigned tasks. The candidate should expect to work closely with the library staff and the Library Director to support the overall library mission and vision.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participates in defining the vision and mission for Adult Services.
  • Creates and maintains a welcoming, organized, accessible, and safe environment for patrons and staff.
  • Offers effective reference and readers advisory assistance to patrons of all ages.
  • Assists and instructs patrons in the use of library services, as well as computer, internet, printer, scanner, and other electronic and digital resources.
  • Develops and maintains well-balanced adult print, audiovisual, and electronic collections to meet community interests and needs.
  • Plans, coordinates and implements a variety of adult recreational, informative, and educational in- person and virtual programs.
  • Coordinates with other departments to plan, promote, implement, and evaluate community programs such as the Adult Summer Reading Program, STEAM, and Makerspace activities.
  • Schedules, trains and supervises library volunteers.
  • Oversees the process of library holds and interlibrary loan requests.
  • Maintains, evaluates, and provides monthly reports including programming and usage statistics.
  • Maintains positive and effective working relationships with local organizations, develops and coordinates community outreach programs and activities.
  • Represents the library in meetings with community organizations and other agencies.
  • Monitors trends and developments in the library field, including emerging technologies.
  • Maintains professional skills by attending workshops and conferences, and networking with professional colleagues. Participates in activities of professional associations as time permits.
  • Adapts to changing work hours and willing to work evenings and weekends including Saturdays and Sundays.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Requirements:
  • Master’s Degree in Library Science (or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited Program
  • New Jersey Professional Librarian Certificate
  • Experience in the following areas desired: management, customer service, providing reference and technology assistance, adult programming, collection development
  • Strong customer service skills and excellent communication skills
  • Ability to bend, push, and lift to 25 lbs. including emptying book bins, packing, and handling shipments of library materials.
  • Must be a New Jersey resident at least within one year of employment.
