Library Assistant - Civic Services (Job #2021-21)
Location/Department: Administration (Bridgewater branch) / Civic Services Library Assistants in Civic Services act as agents of a US Passport Acceptance Facility and as notaries public.

Duties include: Performs direct patron service at an SCLSNJ service desk with specialized customer assistance; provides assistance to the public with applying for and submitting US passport applications; reviews documents such as birth certificates, drivers’ licenses, photos, and other forms of identification as part of the US passport application process and to ensure that the information meets Federal requirements; administers US passport oath to applicants; accepts and processes cash, credit, checks, and money orders as part of the US passport application process; submits US passport applications and fees according to established procedures; serves as a primary contact for notary services in his/her assigned branch; meets customers’ needs by answering general/directional questions and, when necessary, directing them to an appropriate staff member or a specific area of the library based on the request; provides one-on-one or small group training for patrons regarding the passport application process; prepares daily deposit of passport fees and submits to the SCLSNJ Finance Office according to established procedures; submits statistics and other reports of library services; follows up with patrons regarding questions about the passport application process or notary services; performs other clerical tasks as needed or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree, two years of related patron service, library, teaching or computer training experience, or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities; must reside in the State of New Jersey within one year of employment unless exempted by law; reliable transportation to attend training, meetings, and work at other assigned branches or off-site locations as required; for Passport Agent: at least 18 years old; US citizen or national; not under indictment, on parole, or previously convicted for crimes of breach of trust or moral turpitude.

Preferences: Knowledge of US passport application services, notary services, and library operations. Bilingual English / Spanish Hourly Rate:$17.62 (negotiable depending upon experience and qualifications)

Schedule: Up to 20 hours per week Since the library is open days and evenings, schedules may vary on occasion. This position includes: Tuesdays 9:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. Wednesdays 4-9 p.m. Thursdays 3:30 - 8 p.m. Fridays 11:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. Saturdays 9:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. Some holidays. Schedule subject to change with notice

Physical Demands: Reading materials and providing verbal assistance to library users in English; manual dexterity to handle books, software, and a variety of other media formats; intermittent sitting, standing, and walking; ability to perform the essential functions of this position in areas of the building that are only accessible by using stairs; occasional bending, reaching, and stooping; lifting and carrying items weighing up to 20 lbs.; pushing or pulling objects weighing up to 100 lbs.; distinguishing sounds at various frequencies and volumes; distance vision sufficient to distinguish people or objects under a variety of light conditions; vision sufficient to view computer screens and spine labels under a variety of light conditions.
