The current proposed House Budget says "The Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is an independent agency that makes grants to museums and libraries. This is not a core federal responsibility". The NJLA believes that having an informed and literate citizenry and protecting cultural heritage are important national priorities and funding institutions that contribute to this work is indeed a core federal responsibility. The NJLA urges library supporters to communicate the importance of federal funding for libraries to President Obama and our NJ Congressional Delegation. NJ libraries benefit from federal funding from IMLS in many ways including funding for a variety of electronic databases available to all NJ residents and support for the NJ Talking Book and Braille Center.
