Rutgers University Rare Books Assessment Librarian Martin Antonetti will speak on "Why Study the History of the Book, the Archaeology of Texts" at the next Exploring Special Collections and University Archives program on Wednesday, September 22 from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m.

The archaeology of the book is about uncovering clues or traces in the physical object that we can use to evoke a mindset long past. These traces--evidence of the interactions between people and their books--help us understand how knowledge and understanding of our world has been transmitted from person to person, and culture to culture, through the physical medium of the codex. This talk will elucidate the techniques that special collections librarians and archivists can bring to bear on that pursuit, in particular in the classroom.
