National Library Advocacy Day - A Call to Action

Did you know that the funding for Per Capita State Aid was approved by the NJ legislature in 1959, at $1.13 per year, per NJ resident, as the State of New Jersey’s investment in libraries, to improve the quality of life of New Jersey residents? Did you also know that in 2010 funding was significantly reduced to 43 cents per capita and it has been flat-funded since then? Last year we were fortunate to receive an additional $1 million; however, this is just not enough! It’s hard to imagine that we are not even close to the 1959 levels.

The NJLA Public Policy Committee needs people like you and your library staff, trustees, volunteers, library users, and Friends groups, to help us advocate to our legislators to fully fund New Jersey’s Library Per Capita State Aid. We need all our legislators to sign on to the Assembly and Senate PCSA Bills.

National Library Week is a perfect time to bring awareness and help them understand that libraries are a funding priority. Your personal and library experiences are powerful. Share your stories about how the library impacts the lives of its community members and why your library needs the PCSA funding fully restored. Did you know, that if you are receiving State Aid, the amount you receive would be almost three times more? Imagine what you could do with that additional funding!

We have made it very easy for you to help. Attached are two templates for you to personalize; one addressed to your Senator and the other to your Assembly representatives. We have also attached a postcard that can be emailed or printed and mailed.

April 7th is National Library Advocacy Day and if everyone sends something out, it could send a powerful message to our representatives. You might also consider tagging your representatives on your social media or inviting them to your library for a tour and talk about all of the programs, services, and resources that you offer.

Thank you for your help to advocate for New Jersey’s Public Libraries!
