Intellectual Freedom Award

The award recognizes and honors outstanding contributions to intellectual freedom by individuals or institutions in 2023.  According to the ALA, "[i]ntellectual freedom is the right of library users to read, seek information, and speak freely as guaranteed by the First Amendment. Intellectual freedom is a core value of the library profession, and a basic right in our democratic society. A publicly supported library provides free, equitable, and confidential access to information for all people of its community."  The Intellectual Freedom Subcommittee selects the recipient(s) of the award.

 

CRITERIA: 

  • Individuals or institutions having demonstrated leadership and courage in defending and promoting the principles of intellectual freedom.
  • Individuals or institutions having demonstrated leadership and courage by resisting and opposing censorship or other violations of intellectual freedom.
  • Individuals or institutions having produced innovative and creative projects, programs or materials which promote the principles of intellectual freedom.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES: 

Keeping in mind the established criteria, submit a one-page statement using our online submission form, https://forms.gle/JVEJxgQX2AR52M9J8, describing in detail what the nominee has done to deserve this award.

Please also upload copies of supporting materials, such as newspaper articles, letters of recommendation, and other evidence of support from local, state, and/or community organizations.
