Technical Services Librarian - Haddonfield Public Library
Job Description:
Under the general direction of
the Library Director, this employee oversees and coordinates all functions of
the Technical Services Dept.’s resource management, including cataloging,
acquisition, serials control, processing, and maintenance of the library’s
collections. This includes being administrator for Koha and Aspen Discovery, database
management and maintenance, preservation, and some selection of materials. The
department head communicates and coordinates with other staff to develop
library policies, services, budget planning, and strategic planning. Includes
supervision of paraprofessionals.
Excellence in services to the entire community is required, as well as
knowledge of and experience with RDA, MARC, OCLC and other bibliographic
utilities, and Dewey Decimal Classification. Substantial professional knowledge
of and experience with librarianship theories, principles and practices are
required. Performs related duties as required.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supervises the cataloging and classification of
all library materials in all formats following national and local
cataloging standards and practices
- Supervises or completes all original cataloging
- Searches for bibliographic records in bibliographic
utilities (e.g. OCLC)
- Supervises Acquisitions, Serials, and materials
processing functions
- Maintains all library bibliographic and authority
records and related databases
- Coordinates, supervises, assigns, oversees, and
evaluates technical services staff and training activities
- Teaches paraprofessional tech services staff formats
and skills necessary to do copy cataloging
- Performs as System Administrator for Koha
ILS and Aspen Discovery, and coordinates updating,
maintenance, and staff training
for the system
- Supervises collection development for Adult Services
for the library
- Coordinates technical, technology, and circulation
operations with other library departments to facilitate excellent customer
service
- Selects and orders adult materials for the library as
assigned
- Maintains and supervises the weeding of the adult
collection on a continual basis
- Recommends new policies and procedures for the
Technical Services Dept., and implements approved recommendations, with
input from other members of the department.
- Works with patrons and performs supervisory duties
for the staff and building, as necessary
- Assesses needs for and investigates new technologies,
and recommends related equipment and policies to implement them and
integrate them as library services
- Attends meetings as requested
- Prepares reports as requested by the director or
colleagues
- Assists with maintaining the library’s web pages concerning
the collections
- Assists with development and implementation of
policies and procedures for the library
- Other duties as assigned
Required Knowledge, Skills, and
Abilities to perform the job:
- Ability to complete original and copy cataloging,
perform authority control and catalog maintenance in online catalog; and
use MARC bibliographic and authority record formats; classification and
authority control.
- Thorough knowledge of RDA cataloging practices and
MARC format standards.
- Knowledge of library technology, bibliographic
utilities, and integrated online systems (Koha and Aspen Discovery a plus)
- Ability to supervise and evaluate staff work
performance
- Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with
other library staff and professionals in the field
- Strong organizational and excellent interpersonal
skills including oral and written communication skills
- Excellent team collaboration skills and the ability
to adapt in a rapidly changing environment
- Ability to perform work with accuracy and
perseverance
- Ability to work cooperatively and independently, with
initiative and sound judgment
- Ability to effectively evaluate and utilize technical
applications
- Ability to analyze and develop new or revised
procedures and workflow in the department and in library operations
- Thorough knowledge of current trends, innovations and
practices affecting librarianship, particularly in the areas of
automation, bibliographic control and resource management.
- Ability to sit and use the computer for extended
periods and to operate standard office equipment
Qualifications:
- An ALA accredited MLS, MLIS or a Professional Librarian’s
certificate issued by Thomas Edison State College or the New Jersey Dept.
of Education or equivalent state certification and eligibility for NJ
certification
- Preferred: cataloging and technical services
experience in a public library
- At least two years of supervisory experience as a
Professional Librarian or comparable experience
- At least one year’s experience as a cataloger with an
online Integrated Library system, bibliographic utilities and ordering
platforms

Salary Range: $64,022 to $70,424
