Assistant Library Director
The Assistant Library Director plays a pivotal role in the overall management and administration of the Monroe Township Public Library. This position works closely with the Library Director, sharing responsibility for planning, organizing, and directing library services, staff, and operations. The Assistant Director represents the Library in the Director's absence and is a key contributor to the strategic planning and community outreach initiatives. As the Human Resources Manager for the Library, the Assistant Director is responsible for managing and administering a wide range of HR functions. This includes ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, fostering a positive and inclusive work environment, and supporting the Library's mission by developing and retaining a skilled workforce.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
In this multifaceted role, the Assistant Library Director provides comprehensive administrative support by assisting the Library Director in planning, developing, and implementing library policies, procedures, and strategic plans. This includes managing specific library operations and projects as assigned, as well as assisting in budget preparation and monitoring.
The Assistant Director also plays a crucial role in staff supervision and development, supervising and evaluating assigned library staff, and actively participating in the recruitment, hiring, and training of library personnel.
The position of Assistant Director helps develop and implement various programs and services to meet community needs and also contributes to collection development and management.
The Assistant Director is also responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with community organizations and stakeholders and actively promoting the Library's services and programs to the public.
A commitment to technology and innovation is also essential. The Assistant Director stays informed about current trends and technologies in library services and assists in implementing new technologies to enhance library operations and services.
Beyond the general administrative and library duties, the Assistant Director takes on specific human resources duties and responsibilities. This includes coordinating and conducting new employee orientation and onboarding programs, maintaining accurate records of all recruitment and hiring activities, and serving as a primary point of contact for employee inquiries and concerns. The Assistant Director provides guidance and support to supervisors and employees on HR policies and procedures, mediates and resolves employee conflicts and grievances, and conducts investigations into employee complaints and disciplinary matters, all while ensuring the consistent and fair application of library policies.
Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited institution.
- At least 5 years library administrative experience and 3 years of HR experience.
- Extensive knowledge of library principles, practices, and procedures.
- Strong leadership, management, and supervisory skills.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and public relations skills.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
- Knowledge of current library technologies and trends.
- Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work effectively.
- Strong computer literacy is essential.
- Knowledge of HR principles and practices.
- Strong understanding of employment laws and regulations.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Experience with unionized workforces may be required.
- Must be 18 years of age or older and reside in New Jersey unless otherwise exempted by law. Successful candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical, background / reference check and motor vehicle record check.
Schedule: Salaried full-time position (37.5 hours) including days, evening & weekend hours.
Compensation: $100,129.00 including an excellent health insurance package.
