Part-Time Cataloging/Reference Librarian Position – Berkeley Heights Public Library
Berkeley Heights Public Library (BHPL) is seeking a PT Cataloging/Reference Librarian for approximately 20 hours a week, with the possibility of more. The role will spend around 10 hours a week on cataloging, and 10 hours on reference services. The position requires one weekend a month (set rotation), except in August, and may require evening coverage. The majority of the hours will be worked during a 9-5 schedule.
BHPL will be joining MAIN Library Alliance in early Fall which may lead to a decrease in the cataloging tasks and an increase in reference work within the position.
For the cataloging role: you will be responsible for cataloging, electric resource maintenance, and ILS maintenance, including transitioning records to our new ILS system.
For the reference role: you will be working at the Adult Reference desk helping patrons locate items, connect to eResources, help patrons use computers, copy, and print, and assist with other Reference tasks including weeding, creating booklists/displays, and ILL requests.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Cataloging Skills:
- Implements system metadata and cataloging policies, standards, procedures and workflows for new materials and many formats.
- Creates original and copy-cataloged MARC records and order records for materials submitted for catalog entry in compliance with RDA, MARC, LCSH standards and local cataloging policies.
- Assists in preparing cataloging metadata for loading into the MAIN integrated library system (ILS)
- Conducts maintenance of already created records as needed.
- Assists with regular ILS maintenance tasks.
Reference Skills
- Ability to search library catalog and local library catalogs, JerseyCat and ILS systems
- Assist patrons with downloading eResources from multiple sources such as Libby, Hoopla.
- Answering reference questions in person, by email, phone and text; providing assistance to Children’s & Teens when the Youth Services Librarian is not present
- Providing reference and readers’ advisory services in selecting library materials
- Helping patrons use the public library catalog, public internet computers; the copier/printer/scanner and the library’s research databases and online resources
- Participating in collection development, ordering new items for the Non-fiction collection and weeding the Non-Fiction and Reference collection
- Assists staff members with various office duties or special projects.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Troubleshoot computer hardware issues, such as printer jams and malfunctions.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong understanding of MARC formatting principles
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office software including Excel and Word and Google Workspace.
- Ability to proofread for punctuation, spelling and grammar; excellent written, organizational and oral communication skills
- Experience and comfort with an integrated library system (Koha preferred) and cataloging utilities (BTCat, SkyRiver, OCLC preferred)
- Proven track record of multitasking
- Excellent interpersonal, analytical, organizational, problem-solving, time management, and communication skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Ability to produce accurate statistics and reports.
- Ability to work in a team environment and also independently.
Minimum Qualifications:
At least 2 years of public library experience, and cataloging experience is required for this role.
MLS/MLIS degree from an ALA accredited institution and a New Jersey Librarian’s Certification are required. Proficiency with Microsoft office applications; familiarity with our ILS:TLC and or Koha is necessary. Experience using a computer reservation system like TBS is preferred.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
Work is performed primarily in a busy office environment while sitting at a desk or computer station, or while standing for extended periods of time. Physical exertion may be required to lift office supplies and library materials up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The need to respond to competing needs or meet deadlines could cause stress at times. Equipment used includes computers and various office machines.
Compensation
- $38.79 an hour.
- Not to exceed 25 hours per week
