Full-Time Supervising Library Assistant (Circulation Supervisor)
Job Summary:
The Metuchen Public Library is seeking a dedicated, detail-oriented, and customer-focused team player for the Full-Time Supervising Library Assistant (Circulation Supervisor) role. The ideal candidate is organized, approachable, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and committed to providing outstanding service to both patrons and staff.
The Circulation Supervisor ensures smooth daily operation, supervises staff and volunteers, and maintains a welcoming environment. This role includes mentoring staff, supporting professional growth, performing circulation duties, managing transactions and customer records, and preparing financial and statistical reports.
This is an opportunity to lead a collaborative team, enhance library operations, and shape a positive experience for all visitors.
Schedule:
35 hours per week, including evenings and weekends.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Supervises and processes the daily workflow of the Circulation Department.
- Creates and maintains a welcoming, organized, accessible, and safe environment for patrons and staff.
- Plans schedules, assigns duties, trains, supports, and evaluates part-time circulation staff and volunteers.
- Performs circulation duties and provides outstanding customer service.
- Handles overdue/lost/damaged/claims returned materials and patron bill disputes.
- Reconciles cash drawers and print stations, makes bank deposits, and manages circulation-related financial tasks.
- Maintains circulation records, data, and prepares monthly statistics and reports.
- Assists with processing and cataloging materials.
- Participates in reviewing and updating circulation policies, creates a circulation manual, and ensures compliance.
- Provides basic reference and technology assistance to patrons.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Prior public library experience with knowledge of standard library procedures; some supervisory experience required.
- Strong customer service, communication, organizational, and time-management skills.
- Ability to plan, delegate, supervise the work of others, and mitigate service/personnel concerns.
- Ability to analyze problems and recommend solutions, and work both independently collaboratively.
- Detail-oriented with demonstrated accuracy in handling money and statistical reporting.
- Familiarity with automated library systems; proficiency in Google Workspace and Microsoft Office.
- Ability to bend, push, and lift up to 25 lbs.
- Associate or Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Must successfully pass a six-month probationary period.
- Must be a New Jersey resident at least within one year of employment. “New Jersey First Act” (P.L. 2011, c. 70)

Salary: $52,390.00 with benefits, including medical, dental, PTO, and PERS.
