Full-Time Teen Services Librarian - Teaneck Public Library
Job Description:
Teaneck Public Library is seeking a creative, energetic, and community-minded Teen Services Librarian to join our busy Youth Services Department. Under the supervision of the Head of Youth Services, the Teen Services Librarian is responsible for planning, developing, and evaluating library services for teens and tweens in a fast-paced, high-volume public library.
This position involves decision-making related to teen and tween services, including planning and organizing weekly in-house and outreach programs; providing reference and reader’s advisory services; managing and developing collections; and guiding youth in the effective and responsible use of library resources and digital media. The Teen Services Librarian plays a key role in creating a welcoming, inclusive environment that supports teen engagement, leadership, and learning.
While the Teen Services Librarian has a primary focus on teens and tweens, this position is part of a collaborative Youth Services team. Staff work together to support department-wide programming, two public service desks, and special initiatives. This is a full-time position that requires schedule flexibility, including evenings and weekends.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

Plan, implement, and evaluate engaging in-house and outreach programs for teens and tweens, including weekly after-school programming

Develop, manage, and regularly weed young adult collections in multiple formats

Promote collections through booktalks, displays, programs, and other engagement strategies

Coordinate with Patron Services staff on processing and cataloging of young adult materials

Coordinate and manage the Library’s Teen Advisory Board and active teen volunteer program, fostering leadership, collaboration, and civic engagement

Plan and oversee the Teen Summer Reading Program, including activities, incentives, and promotion

Provide reference, reader’s advisory, and technology assistance to teens and families

Guide teens in the responsible and effective use of library resources and digital tools

Create and maintain a vibrant, welcoming space that encourages teen participation and connection

Represent the library at community events, meetings, and outreach opportunities related to teen services

Build and maintain strong relationships with schools, community organizations, and agencies serving youth

Collaborate with Youth Services staff to support children’s and teen programming, including occasional assistance with children’s programs and coverage at the Youth Services desk

Participate in library-wide initiatives, special projects, and cross-departmental efforts

Perform other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution (candidates currently pursuing an MLS/MLIS may also be considered)

Experience working with teens and tweens in a library, school, or community setting

Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with teens, families, staff, and community partners

Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple responsibilities and meet deadlines

Demonstrated commitment to teamwork, collaboration, and inclusive service

Ability to work collaboratively in a team-based department and adapt to changing service needs

Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, best practices in teen services, youth development, and library technologies

Familiarity with tools such as Google Workspace, Canva, social media platforms, WordPress, Polaris, and the BCCLS catalog is a plus; willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies is essential

Familiarity with current trends in teen literature, media, and youth engagement

Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, to meet the needs of teen patrons
REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to work in a public library environment, which may involve prolonged periods of sitting, standing, computer use, and lifting up to 25 lbs.
Library experience within the BCCLS consortium is preferred but not required.
A valid New Jersey driver’s license is required at the time of appointment.
SCHEDULE:
The schedule for this position is 35 hours per week, including a regular evening, occasional Saturday coverage on a rotating basis, and the potential for Sunday coverage on a volunteer basis.
The ideal candidate must be flexible with their hours, as the work schedule is subject to change according to the needs of the library.
