Reference Department – Readers’ Advisory
Job Description

Status: Non-Exempt

Reports to: Head of Reference

Summary

The Readers’ Advisory position is a non-exempt, part-time position that works closely with staff in the Reference, Children’s, Technical Services and Circulation Departments. This position requires individuals who have a friendly, strong customer-service orientation and who have the ability to interact well with all members of the public.  Readers' Advisors must have a wide knowledge of both popular and classic literature and the ability to work well independently. This position reports to the Head of Reference.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • A high school diploma, although some college course work or knowledge of the workings of a library is very desirable
  • Computer skills including, but not limited to, the ability to work competently with the Library’s online catalog, databases, email, calendar and circulation systems, and the ability to use Microsoft Windows; experience with Canva, MS Word and eReaders is preferred, however the ability to learn these skills is also acceptable  
  • Knowledge of popular fiction genres, classic literature and bestsellers
  • The ability to assist patrons with retrieving books from shelves, accessing the quiet study rooms and assisting with Library opening and closing procedures

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Works with patrons to assist them with finding fiction and leisure reading materials  
  • Assists patrons with the quiet study rooms, including using an online calendar reservation system, explaining Library policies and locking and unlocking the rooms  
  • Performs basic circulation tasks such as patron check outs, check ins and renewals 
  • Creates and produces topical book lists and handouts 
  • Assists in the Children’s Room with general patron needs when necessary
  • Facilitates Library book discussion groups
  • Creates fiction book displays
  • Writes reviews of fiction materials for various Library PR
  • Performs other duties as required

 

All Library employees are expected to be courteous and helpful in their dealings with both fellow staff and the public. Promptness, neatness and regular attendance and the ability to be a self-starter are also important parts of this position. Employees must be able to lift, sort, and shelve library materials as required.  Employees must be able to work some nights and weekends.
