Skill-Sharing Conversation: Collection Maintenance for Public Libraries: Wise Weeding Strategies

This month's conversation will focus on the strategic removal or replacement of materials to maintain a relevant, accessible, and appealing collection for your community.

While the American Library Association defines weeding as "critical to collection maintenance," putting this into practice in today's public libraries presents unique challenges. How do you convince reluctant staff members that weeding is an essential collection management tool? What criteria should guide your decisions about which materials to keep, replace, or remove? And what options exist for responsibly handling discarded items?

We'll also address the newer challenge of managing digital resources that don't occupy physical space but can create patron confusion when licenses expire or content is no longer accessible.

We will share practical ways to implement systematic weeding programs and navigate the sometimes emotional aspects of collection maintenance.

This is the second session in our two-part collection management series. Join us for either or both sessions. All public library staff are welcome!
