Job Description:

Part-Time Children’s Library Assistant

The Millburn Free Public Library invites applications to fill a part-time children’s library assistant position in our busy Public Services Department.  Primary responsibility will be in the Children’s Room of the library. Includes pro-rated paid leave time.  Participates in the DCRP retirement plan.  Reports to the Head of Public Services. 

Duties include:

  • Provide friendly children’s room service to patrons of all ages. 
  • Prepare and present library programs, primarily for children up to age 12, including story times, crafts, and other activities that foster creativity, literacy, and a love of the library.  Assist other staff members as needed with their programs.
  • Help decorate the children’s room of the library, including thematic book displays and eye-catching bulletin boards.
  • Assist with general circulation functions, including check-in and check-out of library materials and registration of new patrons.
  • Answer phones and forward calls to appropriate recipients as needed.
  • Assist patrons with general directional questions within the library.
  • Perform filing or shelving following the Dewey Decimal System.  Check shelves to ensure materials are filed properly.  Locate material based on call number.  Perform searches for material not in its proper location.
  • Interpret and enforce library policy in situations relevant to the position, with tact and aplomb.
  • Provide excellent customer service under all circumstances.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum requirements:

  • Open to New Jersey residents only. 
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must consent to and successfully pass a criminal background check. 
  • Comfortable working with the public and with people of all ages, especially children.
  • Excellent customer service and teamwork skills.
  • Able to operate a computer, library software, a web browser, and an e-mail interface.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.  Fluency in English.
  • Ability to follow directions and procedures with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Able to bend, stoop, reach, lift, stand, and ambulate, as needed, as relevant to the position.  Daily tasks require lifting, carrying, moving, and manipulating books and other library material as well as pushing a loaded cart full of books. *
  • Occasional travel to meetings or training outside of the library.
  • Creativity, flexibility, and a sense of humor.

 

Schedule:           21 hours per week.  Includes Wednesday evenings and participation in the Saturday
rotation (every 3rd Saturday).

Title:                    Ranked at Library Assistant by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission.

Compensation:  $22.82 per hour. 

This position is represented by the Communications Workers of America Local 1031, AFL-CIO and is ranked at the position of Library Assistant by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission. Starting salary is based on CWA contract and exceeds the NJLA recommended minimum.

Start Date:          Interviews will be held in early September.  Start date is in late September 2025.    

The first 90 days of employment are provisional.
