Job Description:

The Teaneck Public Library seeks a dynamic, community-focused librarian with strong technology skills and a commitment to excellent library service. This position blends traditional reference and reader’s advisory work with digital instruction, collection development, website oversight, and hands-on technical support in a fast-paced public library environment.
Under the supervision of the Head of Adult and Patron Services, the Adult Services/Technology Librarian plays a key role in advancing adult programming, strengthening digital services, supporting staff technology needs, and enhancing the Library’s online presence. The ideal candidate demonstrates initiative, sound judgment, adaptability, and a collaborative spirit.
Responsibilities:
  • Covering the Reference Desk, including answering reference and reader’s advisory questions, with flexibility to assist at any public service desk or department.
  • Providing prompt, courteous, and direct assistance to all patrons with information regarding the use of library materials, equipment, and services.
  • Planning creative, engaging, and age-appropriate programs and/or technical instruction, independently or in collaboration with other departments and community organizations.
  • Training and developing resources for both staff and the public on the use of digital library resources across platforms and emerging technologies.
  • Providing technical support for various library equipment and technologies, including creating instructional materials and internal documentation for staff.
  • Developing and maintaining the library collection; evaluating circulation data and community trends to inform purchasing and weeding decisions.
  • Maintaining and developing the library website and supporting the digital content strategy.
  • Coordinating and supporting staff members in STEM/STEAM programming efforts.
  • Participating in library-wide initiatives, special projects, and cross-departmental efforts.
  • Integrating technological solutions to address everyday challenges and support workflow improvements.
  • Publicizing and promoting programming and services through traditional and social media platforms; providing outreach to the community.
  • Building relationships with community organizations to expand partnerships and enhance services; representing the Library at community events and outreach opportunities.
  • Serving as the main liaison between the Library and BCCLS technology support.
  • Performing other duties as assigned in support of an evolving and growing public library.
Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution (candidates currently pursuing an MLS/MLIS may also be considered).
  • Demonstrated experience in the following areas: customer service, reference and technology assistance, adult programming, and collection development.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, courteously, and effectively with library patrons and staff.
  • Familiarity with tools such as Google Workspace, Canva, social media platforms, WordPress, Polaris, and the BCCLS catalog is a plus; willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies is essential.
  • Strong interest in emerging library trends and community-centered service models.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with staff across departments.
  • Flexibility to assist in any department and at any service desk.
  • Commitment to continuing education through workshops, webinars, and professional development opportunities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving diverse communities.
  • BCCLS and Polaris LEAP experience preferred but not required.
Requirements:
Must be able to work in a public library environment, which may involve prolonged periods of sitting, standing, computer use, and lifting up to 25 lbs.
Library experience within the BCCLS consortium is preferred but not required.
A valid New Jersey driver’s license is required at the time of appointment.
Schedule:
The schedule for this position is 35 hours per week, including a regular evening, Saturday coverage on a rotating basis, and potential Sunday coverage on a volunteer basis.
The ideal candidate must be flexible with their hours, as the work schedule is subject to change based on the Library's needs.
