Overview:

The Mercer County Library System is seeking a part-time 19 hour per week position in the Adult Reference Department at the Lawrence Headquarters Branch.

We are seeking an energetic graduate student currently enrolled in an MLS/MLIS program, with a passion for adult services and a strong commitment to providing excellent public service. The candidate should be open to scheduling in-person and virtual programming at days and times that adults will find convenient, and expect to participate in outreach in the community.  Willingness to be part of a team environment and collaborate with the youth services and circulation departments is a must, as is strong oral and written communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.

The successful candidate will be enthusiastic, flexible, and forward thinking. Excellent customer service skills and a willingness to be a part of a team environment in order to provide a diverse public outstanding reference and programming for adult patrons is a must. The adult services librarian will contribute, along with the rest of the staff, to facilitate a vibrant and well-rounded Adult Services Department. Hours/Schedule: 

This is a 19 hour per week position and includes at least one evening per week and weekends. The branch is open on Sundays and four County-observed holidays; the candidate should be available to work Sundays if necessary, and occasionally on some of the holidays.  

Salary Range: AFSME 3566 affiliated, U67: $19.96 - $26.30 p/hr. 

Responsibilities:

 • Searching the library catalog and locating library materials.
 • Accessing databases and other reference materials and showing patrons how to do so.
 • Answering reference questions presented in person, electronically and by telephone.
 • Using computer, scanner, copier and projector equipment.
 • Providing reference and readers’ advisory services and selecting library materials.
 • Assisting patrons with the operation of computers and computer software.
 • Participating in weeding and collection development.
 • Keen interest in adult programming and willingness to provide in-person and virtual programs that respond the educational informational and recreational needs of the community, in compliance with the library policies.
 • Participation in the library’s social media platforms, as well as writing posts for the MCLS blog and podcast.
 • Assisting with outreach events and initiatives.
 • Determines content and arrangement of library material for displays, exhibits, and special library programs.
 • Attends seminars and meetings of professional and technical organizations to keep informed about current and emerging library services and technical developments.
 • Knowledge of a second language is a plus, as is an interest in arching and local history.


Requirements: 

Enrollment in an MLS/MLIS graduate level degree from an ALA accredited institution, with significant coursework completed and that will result in a New Jersey Professional Librarian’s Certificate issued by Thomas Edison State University required. 

 Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

 • Computer proficiency, including a working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
 • Knowledge or previous experience with Sirsi Workflows library software and Library Aware desirable.
 • Manual dexterity to handle books, software, and a variety of other media formats.
 • Intermittent sitting, standing, and walking; occasional bending, reaching, and stooping; lifting and carrying items weighing up to 35 lbs.; pushing or pulling objects (book carts) weighing up to 100 lbs.
 • Knowledge of theories, objectives, principles, and techniques of librarianship, including Library Classification Systems.
 • Knowledge of form, content, and use of bibliographies and book lists.
 • Ability to effectively use social media formats and platforms, including the library’s website.
 • Ability to use technology, including the library’s automated system, online reference resources, various ebook and audiobook platforms, as well as mobile applications.
 • Ability to appropriately organize library materials, including files, books, periodicals, digital media, etc.
 • Ability to organize library programs and procedures.
 • Ability to keep informed of current theories, objectives, principles, and techniques of librarianship; and adapt to modern technology, library trends, and innovations.
 • Ability to keep informed of current events, and popular and local culture.
 • Ability to think critically and creatively to solve problems and implement ideas.
 • Ability to work harmoniously, creatively, and collaboratively with others.
 • Ability to communicate effectively and share knowledge with others using oral, written and electronic communication skills.
 • Ability to practice effective customer service skills to best determine patrons' needs.
 • Ability to train and assist the public with communications, technology literacy, and all information resources.
 • Ability to identify, customize, create, and present innovative programs and services and integrate new technologies into library service.
 • Ability to provide instruction and technical expertise to nonprofessional and paraprofessional staff may be required.
 • Ability to give appropriate instruction to nonprofessional and paraprofessional staff in the use of the library and its resources and in basic research methods.
 • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
