Position Title: Programming and Marketing Librarian
Reports to: Adult Department Head
Classification: Full Time / Exempt
The Berkeley Heights Public Library is seeking a creative, organized, and community-focused professional to serve as its Programming and Marketing Librarian. This newly created role is responsible for developing engaging adult programs and promoting library services through effective marketing, communications, and outreach.
Working within the Adult Services Department, the Programming and Marketing Librarian plans and delivers educational, cultural, and recreational programs for adults while managing the promotion of library programs and services through newsletters, social media, calendars, and other marketing tools. The role also provides reference and public service support to patrons and collaborates with community partners to expand the library’s reach and impact.
Key Responsibilities
Programming & Community Engagement
● Plans, develops, and presents engaging adult programs including educational workshops, crafts, discussion groups, and community events such as Tinker Tuesday, Coffee & Conversation, and similar initiatives.
● Evaluates program effectiveness annually and recommends improvements in collaboration with the Head of Adult Services.
● Builds and maintains relationships with local organizations, community groups, and statewide partners to expand programming opportunities.
● Represents the library at community meetings and events, including groups such as the Senior Affairs Committee.
● Tracks program attendance, participation, and related statistics to support reporting and evaluation. Marketing, Communications & Social Media
● Develops and distributes the library’s monthly programming calendar to staff, community organizations, and the public.
● Creates and manages the library’s monthly newsletter highlighting upcoming programs and services.
● Maintains and updates the library’s online event calendar.
● Designs promotional materials, including flyers, digital graphics, and event announcements using tools such as Canva or LibraryAware.
● Plans, implements, and evaluates social media communications across platforms such as Facebook and Instagram to promote library services and programs.
● Collaborates with the Head of Adult Services on website updates and marketing initiatives.
● Prepares program updates, statistics, and reports for Board meetings and annual reporting. Reference & Public Service
● Provides reference and reader’s advisory services at the Adult Reference Desk.
● Assists patrons with locating materials, using library technology, registering for programs, booking meeting rooms, and accessing digital resources.
● Supports general customer service needs within the library and contributes to a welcoming and inclusive public service environment. Essential Qualifications
● Master’s Degree in Library Science (MLS/MLIS) from an ALA-accredited program.
● Valid NJ Professional Librarian Certificate, or ability to obtain within one year of hire.
● Professional library experience that includes programming, public service, or community engagement responsibilities.
● Prior demonstrated experience using social media and marketing tools such as: Canva, Library Aware, Meta for Business, etc.
● Basic demonstrated experience with WordPress
● Proficiency with common office and library technologies, including Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, Canva, and Integrated Library Systems (such as Koha), and the ability to learn new software systems
● Strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines. ● Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends. Desired Characteristics
● Prior experience working in the public library
● Experience managing digital marketing, social media, or community communications.
● Ability to build partnerships with local organizations and community groups.
Hours and Compensation This position is a 35-hour workweek and includes a regular schedule of one evening per week and one Saturday per month. Additional evening and weekend hours may be required based on operational needs, including special events and programs.
This position offers a salary of $66,000, with flexibility up to $69,000 based on experience and overall qualifications. The Library offers a comprehensive benefits package to eligible employees, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, as well as enrollment in PERS retirement system.
