SUPERVISING LIBRARY ASSISTANT
HEAD OF USER SERVICES
FULL TIME
Reporting to the Associate Director, this position is responsible for the development, coordination, and daily operations of the User Services within the Piscataway Public Library. The User Services department is primarily responsible for the processing, maintenance, and circulation of library materials within the library and as a member of the STELLA library consortium, as well as the cleanliness and appearance of library facilities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
● Supervises the User Services Department staff, at both library locations, which includes scheduling, training, and assignment of staff duties.
● Prepares performance evaluations for all department members and promotes staff development.
● Participate in the recruitment and hiring of departmental staff.
● Cultivates a positive work culture within the department through proactive mentoring.
● Provides and models high-level customer service during patron interactions at service desks, including resolution of complex issues that may arise.
● Performs regular review of circulation workflows, procedures, and documentation to ensure maximum quality and efficiency.
● Accurately interprets and applies approved library policy and procedures.
● Oversees shelving and collection maintenance.
● Manages the flow of materials inside and outside the library, including supporting reciprocal relationships.
● Supervises the receiving, processing, and cataloging of library materials.
● Works with custodial staff to maintain a clean and safe environment and works with Administration to address ongoing and unusual issues.
● Keeps accurate statistics and prepares monthly reports.
● Upholds the mission, vision, and values of the library. Demonstrates an understanding of and a respect for diversity and promotes intellectual freedom and equal access to information within the department.
● Cooperates with other departments, teams, and Administration in an effort to plan, promote and provide responsive, effective, and efficient library services.
● Participants in professional development opportunities, including serving on library and STELLA consortium committees.
REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION
● High School Diploma or possession of an approved High School Equivalency Certificate. College degree preferred.
● Minimum of three years of experience with library circulation work and/or administrative assistant duties with progressive levels of responsibility.
● Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written directions.
● Ability to communicate courteously and clearly with customers, staff, and other organizations
● Knowledge of Windows environment, typing and mouse operation, Internet searching, use of email and standard office computer programs.
● Competency in the use of relevant technology.
● Commitment to deliver excellent customer service.
● Experience with Polaris LEAP is highly desirable.
● Supervisory experience preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
● The ability to stand, sit, walk, and stoop in provision of library service.
● The ability to handle, reach for, and carry materials up to 20 lbs.
● Dexterity to operate keyboards and other office equipment.
● Visual acuity to read print and computer screens.
● Vocal ability to communicate clearly and courteously.
● The ability to write clearly and effectively.
● Hearing to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
● The ability to travel between libraries.
SCHEDULE
35 hours per week, including evening hours and rotating shifts on Saturdays and Sundays.
SALARY
$72,108
