Local History Assistant
Hourly Wage: $27.96
The Long Branch Free Public Library is the place where tradition and innovation meet. We are a nationally recognized library seeking a welcoming, customer service-focused, and energetic individual to join our Local History team. Under general supervision, the assistant will perform work involved in organizing, preserving, and assisting with programming for the local history collection.
Examples of work:
- Assist patrons in researching local history and/or genealogy records.
- Plans, coordinates, and conducts local history and genealogy programming and outreach for patrons of all ages, including partnering with outside speakers, local organizations, the municipality, local schools, and associations.
- Provides customer service to patrons which may include researchers of all levels, and assists them in-person, by phone, and by email.
- Compiles statistical data related to the department; prepares related reports and documentation.
- Represents the department and/or the library at a variety of internal and external meetings, public events, training sessions, committees, and/or other related events.
- Acquire, organize, and preserve local history and genealogical materials, including physical items and digital resources.
- Supervise volunteers and interns, including prioritizing and assigning tasks
- Maintain Local History collection by purchasing books, accepting donations, maintaining, and updating digitized records.
- Build and maintain relationships with local organizations, historical societies, and other libraries to foster collaboration and expand access to resources.
- Check shelves to ensure materials are organized properly.
- Understand how to use the catalog and other online resources.
- Explain library policy to members of the public and other libraries as needed.
- Attend staff meetings and periodic training as required.
- Participate in additional responsibilities assigned by the Director.
Required knowledge and abilities:
- Ability to converse clearly and courteously with patrons and staff.
- Must have strong customer service and computer skills.
- Strong organizational ability.
- Ability to comprehend, analyze, and interpret policies and procedures of the library.
- Knowledge of Long Branch and the immediate area (background in history or archives helpful).
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
