Adult Services Librarian - South River Public Library
Job Description:
An Adult Services Librarian plans, organizes, and implements services, programming, and collection development for patrons aged 18 and older. They provide professional reference assistance, technology instruction, and reader's advisory while engaging the community through outreach and innovative programming to meet diverse educational and recreational needs.
Key Responsibilities

Reference & Reader's Advisory: Staffs the information desk, assisting patrons with finding materials, using technology, and navigating databases.

Programming & Outreach: Develops and hosts programs for adults, such as book clubs, workshops, guest lectures, and community outreach events.

Collection Development: Selects, maintains, and weeds adult fiction and non-fiction collections, ensuring they meet community interests and standards.

Technology & Instruction: Teaches digital literacy, including the use of computers, tablets, e-books, and online tools.

Marketing & Promotion: Creates promotional materials, manages, and updates social media, and produces displays to promote library services.

Administrative Duties: Participates in staff meetings, prepares reports, and may oversee library operations in the absence of a manager.

Collects, maintains, and reports statistical data as needed.

Works cooperatively with colleagues and other library departments to develop plans and initiatives that support the library’s mission and goals.

Stays current on professional and technological developments through participation in professional organizations, workshops, continuing education courses and the reading of professional materials.

Researches, writes, and administers grants.

Performs other assigned duties.
Qualifications

Education: A Master’s Degree in Library Science (MLS/MLIS) from an ALA-accredited institutionExperience: Previous experience in a public library, specifically in adult services or reference, is preferred.

Skills: Strong customer service, communication, technology skills, and the ability to work independently or in teams.

Demonstrated ability and enthusiasm for working with the public.

Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of current and emerging professional library principles, public reference service expertise, and an understanding of public library operations.

Working knowledge of current best practices in information literacy instruction.

Working knowledge of common library systems, Microsoft Office software, and research databases.

Maintains a thorough knowledge of current and emerging library technologies.

Ability to work as part of a cohesive team. Willingness to assist and support coworkers, contribute ideas and maintain flexibility.

Ability to learn new technologies and adapt to rapidly changing technology environment
Working Conditions

Physical: Must be able to use a computer for extended periods, navigate library shelves, and occasionally lift or push loaded book carts.

Schedule: requires flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
